A few years later SarahLyn herself was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She was sitting in her comfortable chair one day when the UPS man delivered a large package. Avi brought the package in, opened it up, looked inside and a big smile came across his face. What's in the package SarahLyn asked? Without saying a word Avi picked up the package from her niece, walked over to SarahLyn, turned it upside down and dumped 800 or 900 cranes on her lap.
She smiled, she cried, she laughed
A year or so later SarahLyn learned that Avi's stepdaughter had developed breast cancer and also decided to have a double mastectomy. His step daughter's mother, Avi's former wife, had died of breast cancer 17 years before. SarahLyn packed up some of the cranes and send them to the step daughter.
SarahLyn was now in hospice for her own cancer. The UPS man arrived again and left a package. Avi opened the package looked inside and smiled once again. He showed the contents to SarahLyn and she cried. The package was from his stepdaughter.
The cranes had flown full circle once again

Story of the Peace Cranes

I love this Story Avi!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great story. I was curious about why cranes? So being in the electronic era I googled it (probably not the only one to do so)
ReplyDeleteIn the Japanese culture it's believed if you fold a 1000 cranes then the person folding the cranes will be granted a wish by a crane....
Whatever the meaning its a very touching and loving gesture
Thank you, Avi, for this beautiful story. The image of the cranes flying full circle makes me weep with joy. I believe this is such an important part of our healing process. What a powerful contribution you have made to the world, SarahLyn, with your wonderful cranes. You are a remarkable human being.
ReplyDeleteI love you dear friend. I feel so honored to hold a few of your cranes.

ReplyDeleteLet those wings carry you SarahLyn. Peace is your way.I will try to follow your beautiful example.
ReplyDeleteGreat story, we can see SarahLyn making all those beautiful cranes. So glad they came full circle years later. What an act of love to make so many cranes, but one who not expect any less of SarahLyn. You have always been a visually creative person, you have always lived life with gusto and danced like no one was watching. (The last dance comment, I witnessed first hand, dancing with you at the Cuthbert Amphitheater!) You are in our thoughts and prayers dear friend. Love, Becki and Rod
